‘Studied photography in Australia’

David was born in Australia and studied photography at James Cook University in Townsville, Queensland, graduating in 1991, at the cusp of the digital photography era. With the world’s first fully digital camera released in 1989 and Adobe Photoshop 1.0 announced in 1990, this certainly was an exciting time to become a professional photographer (although it would be another decade before digital became mainstream)!

David spent these formative years immersed in analogue photography, shooting on film and polaroids, and working in the dark-room with negatives and transparencies. After completing his studies, he worked for 2 years as a full-time photographic assistant for a portrait studio before going on to work as a freelance assistant to various commercial photographers in order to broaden his experience, whilst developing his own portfolio.

‘Emigrated to the UK in his early 20’s’

David emigrated to the UK in 1996, arriving with just a 20kg bag of belongings (mostly camera equipment!) and some modest savings. After a period of exploring the UK and his Scottish origins, he eventually settled down to establish himself as a photographer in Oxford.

With little money left, no contacts and having had to sell most of his equipment along the way, he started from scratch. During this time, he held down various other jobs to survive such as picture framing, selling cameras and teaching photography. However he never lost sight of his dream to succeed as a photographer taking every opportunity to meet and assist other photographers along the way.

‘Opened his first photography studio in Oxford, in 2002’

David began finding enough work to become a full time photographer in 2000, opening his first studio in Oxford soon after. The Fisher Studios brand was formed in has continued to grow ever since and moved to its current location in Marston Street in 2015. The new studio is a bright, fully air-conditioned space and has a separate ‘green room’ for hair, makeup and changing. It also has dedicated parking and is conveniently located for central Oxford.

David’s success of over 20 years as a professional photographer, can be attributed to various factors. To begin, his early studies set a foundation for creative and technical merit. Experience gained from working as an assistant then provided a practical understanding of the craft. A hunger for never-ending improvement, enthusiasm for the latest technologies and sheer perseverance have also helped. And a willingness to adapt to this crazy new world we find ourselves in, will undoubtedly be critical going forward.

Ultimately however, what sets the Fisher Studios brand apart, is an ethos which places the customer’s best interests at the very heart of everything we do. David’s greatest passion is for producing images that his clients love and his greatest reward is in succeeding.
