As Christmas approached, Annabel’s Pâtisserie was in full swing, preparing for one of it’s busiest times of the year. Amid the hustle, I had the pleasure of collaborating with Annabel, who kindly sent me some of her exquisite handmade chocolates to photograph. Her passion for crafting beautiful, flavourful confections – blending traditional techniques with a touch of innovation – was evident in every piece. It felt like the perfect opportunity to highlight her artistry and support a fellow local business here in Oxfordshire.
The images I created reflect a balance of minimalist design and contemporary food photography techniques. I drew inspiration from modern sculpture and mid-century abstract art, aiming for compositions defined by clean lines, symmetry, and a thoughtful use of negative space. Hard, directional lighting was essential in creating striking shadows that highlighted the dimensionality and texture of the chocolates, bringing them to life. With a controlled depth of field, every intricate detail-from marbling to golden highlights and embossed designs-was captured with precision.
Playful touches, like the raspberry jam, added an expressionist flair, providing dynamic contrast to the more structured compositions. I also took inspiration from Bauhaus design principles, using negative space to keep the focus on the chocolates, letting them truly shine.
A huge thank you to Annabel for trusting me with the opportunity to photograph her beautiful creations. The chocolates were as delicious as they were visually stunning, and it was an absolute pleasure to work with such a talented local business.
