The background of your portrait is one of many things to consider when booking a studio session. Have a think about the purpose of the image – is it for professional reasons? Where will the photo be seen? I.e on an ID badge, a website or the inside of a book cover? What will you be wearing? Dark colours, patterns, fabrics? Would you like the background to reflect a similar colour palette to what you will be wearing and your skin tone or contrast with it?

Here at Fisher Studios we have a wide array of background colours and textures that can be lit and photographed in all sorts of different ways to achieve a certain effect. Let me list some options below –

  • Solid colors:

White to black and everything in between, or a pop of colour are great for a classic, clean look that will allow you to be the focal point.

  • Gradients:

A subtle light gradient across a background can add depth and interest without being too distracting.

  • Texture:

Use a textured backdrop for added visual interest.

  • Light:

We can use lighting to change the appearance of a background from over exposing it to the point of bright white to not lighting it all.

  • Focus:

Our camera settings can also affect the way a background looks. By opening the aperture wide we can drop the background out of focus to create a blurred look that can reduce distraction from a subject.

Please see below some examples of the backgrounds we have here at Fisher Studios, if you are unsure we are always happy to advise just drop us a message.
